Hi Everyone! I was really touched by the circulating news of a 6-year-old boy who was kidnapped and killed by his own uncle. What a shame! How can your own kinsmen and blood do such a brutal and horrible thing to such an innocent little soul? Who are we to trust as parents if blood is betraying blood. I pray and hope that the mother will be comforted in this time. This mind and heart will never forget.
October to December Challenge: Intermittent fasting, 1-hour jogging and 2 days of boxing.
I know it’s in the middle of October already but I just had to share this with you all. It’s detrimental to the state of our mental health as well as for self-development. As a millennial mum, I have gone through this 3 times in my life and I know for a fact that it helps.
I have put myself on a huge radar to lose 13 to 15 kgs in 3 months. I know it’s a long shot but it’s worth a try. Growing up, I was a size 30 or 28 UK size. I was pretty skinny but endowed with thick thighs. It showed that I would develop into a voluptuous woman once I tasted protein S and had kids. It didn’t take long for me to gain weight. In my first pregnancy, I gained 20 kgs. Some of the weight dropped off after giving birth but the belly has remained. The next coming 3 months are going to be gruelling but productive. What to do:
- Have a positive attitude and surround yourself with people with the same mindset as you. What I mean is, be in social network groups working on the same goals as you are. In that way, you will feel challenged and encouraged. Groups I would recommend are Zim Mums Healthy Eating and Fitness Club. You can find it on Facebook.
- Prepare a meal chart.
- Buy the food before the challenge starts
- Buy trainers, PE Kits, bottle drinks, an exercise mat and a towel with vivid measurements that will let you know how many litres of water you have drunk.

The first time I heard about intermittent fasting, I never thought I would be able to go for 5 hours without eating anything. Honestly, I am a food lover. I love the sugar especially from doughnuts, cakes and all baked goodies. My vices also include meat and fizzy drinks. Food is basically a pleasure for me.
What is intermittent fasting?
This is when you go on some periods without eating anything. We are already actively involved in intermittent fasting. How? Well, the time you sleep after eating your body will be fasting. Intermittent fasting is a continuation of that. So, Intermittent fasting (IF) is a period or cycle of time when you do not eat food. It’s not specific on what you should not eat or what you should eat. Therefore, it is not a diet.
Common types of IF
Most Africans I know have practised fasting for religious purposes. I embarked on religious fasting from the time I was 13 but I have never really looked forward to it as this type of fasting does not permit you to drink water.
This is when you have periods of time you eat daily during the day.
It means having a window period of 8 hours you eat and 16 hours of fasting. Most commonly done as it is the easiest. I also started with this. I would break my fast at 10 a.m.
I recently took this challenge of having 23 hours of fasting and only 1 hour of eating, This for me is very efficient and result oriented. The first few days were not as hard as I thought. Albeit, the second week has felt like I’m walking on needles. I have been hit by serious hunger pangs and succumbed to eating fried eggs mixed with vegetables or just eating fruits such as oranges before the hour arrived. During the day, I drink lots of water and 2 to 3 cups of tea with 1 teaspoon of sugar and powdered milk.
Eat for 4 hours, for instance, from 1 p.m to 5 p.m every day. Fast for the other 20 hours.
- Eat stop Eat
This allows you to eat only dinner or something every day, that is to say, 1 meal per day, then eat nothing till the next day.
Fast for 10 hours and eat whatever you want for 14 hours.
2. Alternate Day Fasting (ADF)
Fasting for a few times per week, on non-consecutive days, and eating “normally” on the other days.
Fasting every now and then (e.g.once per month, or once a year).
One of the most important factors in losing weight is nutrition. Make sure you have enough greens in your refrigerator and fruits to snack on. The algorithm behind losing weight is burning more calories than you take.
I wake up 5 times a week to jog. The remaining days are for either lounging, resting my muscles and boxing depending on how I feel on that day.
I feel that it’s better to wake up early and do away with physical exercise before the brain has figured out what it wants for the day.

- Sets the tone of your day for efficiency and productiveness
- Burns unnecessary fat and calories
- Gives you a good head start on the day
- Strengthens your bones
- Keeps you calm and less stressed.
- Most importantly, it helps you lose belly fat
I have 3 cesareans and have struggled with losing belly fat but ever since I cut down on starch and started intermittent fasting, I have noticed excellent results in shedding off the excess belly fat.
This is a journey and It’s definitely not a fly by night experience. You have to be focused and never mind what people say. Just a week ago, I bumped into a friend in town and she said in passing how my belly stuck out like a sore thumb. That did not deter me from continuing with my challenge. I know what I want and I’m charging out. I want results and I am going to do what it takes to get them.
Never forget that this is for you. It is because You, not your partner, boyfriend /husband or whoever you have, wants to be healthy. Do it for yourself. Exercising adds more years to your age but definitely takes off the ageing of your body. Join me today, it’s never too late to start doing right.
